Free Mac D tinterent

Eileen Roe | Monday 10th May, 2010

Well I write this diary entry sitting with Kate in the towns closest Mac Donald’s to use the free tinternet & its an amusing site to see the scu van parked up outside!  So I’m going to have to type this pretty fast as to my disappointment the bat wasn’t fully charged. So from the end of Feb/beginning of March I had been taken driven lessons & was told I needed to pass my driven test before I headed over to Holland which would be the end of April. I was struggling to get a slot for Dunfermline before I was to go but I was lucky to get a cancelation & it wasn’t untill the 4thMay. So I made the decision to stay until the test & then Kate Cullen & myself were to depart Scotland on the 6th. So after spending a ridicules amount of money on driven lessons, the booking of the test itself & hiring the car I passed with flying colours with only 3minors & was on a high for the rest of the day! No celebrations went on though because there was too much to get done e.g. packing, printing racing letters & people to see before the drive down to Newcastle. But I was still packing a couple of hours before I needed to head to Miss Cullen’s house: S So even after passing my driven past I still couldn’t help Kate out with the driven because you need to be 25+ to drive Mr Herdys van. Luckily we had the van with 3 bikes, motor bike, food & all our bags for staying out here till August-September travelling in a normal car wouldn’t have been possible! We were booked onto the ferry which was a 15hrs journey which went pretty smoothly & arrived in the Netherlands at 9am in rubbish weather (no sun in sight!) We found our house for the next couple of months easily with the help of the garmin which is just south east of Arnhem (nice & close to a city). Kate & myself went out for a pre race ride on Sat & unexpectedly bumped into an old team mate of mines from the previous year & the team mate of Kates from Moving Ladies. So thanks to Alma we got shown a training route which helps ALOT! On Sunday just past I was entered into a big Dutch race thanks to the help of Chris, Kate’s team manager  with a small field of around 85. Last year this was my first race in Holland & i managed to pull out 33rd so i was kind of hoping to better that. But it wasn’t to be my day at all. I managed to get involved in a crash 10km into the race & straight over the handle bars  onto the hands & knees but I wasn’t that badly damaged so checked the wheels weren’t buckled & chased to get back on using the convoy. So to cut the long story short 2 other crashes happened in front of me but i managed to stop just in time for them & again had to chase to get back on. By this point I was really frustrated at the standard of the bunch riding (braking suddenly). Next came the cobbled section where the bunch split & i was stupidly sitting too far back & missed it. Marinna Vos won with no problems at all & Katie came in an impressive 13th. I eventually finished 2mins down on the bunch in 75th place. So with the first race out the window I’m hoping it’s my last crash & i sort myself out with actually managing to see the front of the bunch in the next one.  Right well i just managed to finish this in time before my laptop will cut out!
