GRAMPIAN GRAND PRIX- SATURDAY 21 AUGUST 2010

The countdown has begun to Aberdeenshire's Premier closed road race at the Grampian Transport Museum,Alford.

Entry is now with a closing date of 14th August 2010. Scottish Cycling will be promoting Go Race events, based on an omnium event, run by Ewan Murray, the Regional Development Coach. Entry to the Go Race is free with the senior race costing £8. A RR licence, silver/gold membership or Day licences is required.

Until now entry has been restricted to ADCA riders but is now open to all riders, so take advantage and have a go at some fast but safe racing in Aberdeenshire.

Last years race was a finalist in the Scottish Cycling Event of the Year 2009 and this year promises to be just as exciting, especially given the rapid development of some of the areas youth riders. The invitational pursuit series also returns, so even if you aren't able to ride come along to Alford to watch some great racing in a safe location. There is no entry fee for visitors and there is even a grandstand to hopefully enjoy the racing and hopefully great weather. The track opens at 0830 with the Prologue TT at 0930.

The senior event consists of a one lap prologue which will sort the riders into their respective race groups. The groups then ride 2 x circuit races to decide the overall winners.

Regular updates and race build up, including interviews with some of those riding will be published on the Ythan Forum.

We submitted our date last year to the district. After that we had nothing to do with other races/dates.

Given the low numbers of riders from up here who are taking part in road races and with the exception of the Granite boys and probably about 6 or 7 others who have travelled south this year from ADCA I'm not sure who would be travelling to Paisley. I would be surprised going by last year if those targeting the Crit Champs would be entering our event although if they do they would be more than welcome.

The purpose of this event is to try and engage those who haven't raced before to try it on a closed circuit. Last years review gives an idea of what the day is aimed at, which was mainly 2/3/4 Cat riders having a go.

The 2010 Grampian Grand Prix will take place on Saturday 21 August 2010 at the Grampian Transport Museum, Alford.

Entries are open and some of you have been good enough to enter once again. We are keen to see more riders entering before the closing date on 14th August and can guarantee the same exciting atmosphere and competition as we saw in 2009. The same officiating and marshall team from 2009 are in place and all we need now are the riders to make the day complete.

http://www.ythancc.org.uk/downloads/GrampianGPFlyer2010.pdf

provides further details and due to the ongoing issues with the BC Calendar please refer to

http://new.britishcycling.org.uk/search/article/sc20100709-news-Scottish-Cycling-Events

Senior Entry Fee is £8 (£10 on the day)
Day Licence required - Bronze BC- £5 Silver/Gold- Free Non BC Member- £10

Go Race- Free Entry Bronze/Silver/Gold
Go Race non member requires to pay £1.50 for day licence

Andy Duncan will be returning as your race MC and once again we will have music and refreshments. Once we have more entries we will issue invitations for the Invitational Pursuit races and Ewan Murray from Scottish Cycling has devised a new omnium format for the Go Races.

Families visiting the event can take advantage of the grandstand, whilst riders will have access to the toilet block and changing tent throughout.

One slight change will be the prologue TT starting at 9am instead of 9.30am. This is to assist the race venue as they have a large music concert taking place later that day. We have also been provided with our own parking area beside the new musuem building at the bottom end of the track. In the next few weeks we will be publishing interviews with some of the riders taking part in this years race at http://www.ythancc.org.uk/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=3

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully we will see you in a few weeks.

This event has just over a week to the closing date of 14th August and only has 11 senior entries and 7 youths. In an attempt to encourage participation the race has always had a reduced entry fee and that combined with the costs of running the event mean that unless there is a significant improvement it is in danger of cancellation.

Our hosts for the race have donated significant track time to us in the interests of developing racing in the North East when they could quite easily taken a full paying organisation . As a result the closing date of 14th August will be strictly enforced so that an early decision can be made. Although EOL is available the decision will be based on the entry numbers at closing date, in fairness to the riders who have entered, to our hosts at Alford and my team of helpers.

I have no desire to take others away from Erskine, it is the national championship and should be supported fully. The GGP is a development event for novices and youths and there are more than enough riders in the North and North East to provide a competetive field.

Thanks

Hi,
I was keen to ride this event but by putting the line about pref to northern riders for spots may have scared some riders off. Then this week I've been worried that if I enter your race you will cancel it. Bit worrying that you have posted you are thinking about it because you only have 11 riders. Anyway this info you have posted is the reason I'm riding the crit champs instead. Sorry and best of luck with the event. It sounds amazing and I was really looking forward to it before I saw that you were thinking of cancelling. I hope it's on next year. I hope this post is readable as I can't see what I'm writing. Unfortunately this race costs money to run due to venue hire, PA hire, trophies and a team of about 12 to make it run safely, all of whom have given up family time or racing to help. Given that the North East has a club with 400 members and other riders who also race, I don't think it was too big a hope that ADCA would fill at least 50% of the field but its not the first time this year that an Aberdenshire event has not had entries, either in large numbers or before closing dates.

The restriction on other riders was lifted on 23 July, long before any concerns were raised about any entry levels to any race on that weekend. 541 hits on here and I have had no queries about the initial restriction being an issue. I've had one entry from NOSCA , the rest from ADCA but nothing from any other area. If riders are deciding a week from a closing date or in the days before whether to ride or not then organisers are going to continue to be in a difficult position.

The issue of why so many youth events and other races were spread across the country on the same day is one for whoever approved the calendar. No one got in touch to ask anyone to change dates.

12 seniors at £8 each (reduced to try and encourage folk to race, especially if they have the additional cost of a day licence) minus the fee back to SC doesn't leave me with much to work with and it also doesn't equate to a fair race when you have three sub hour riders and the rest being novices or with little experience.

The bigger issue for the area is why out of 500 club members in ADCA we only have 12 for this race and similar numbers in the last few races which were surviving by organisers having to chase folk up or warn about potential cancellations.

The closing date remains 14th August, entries are more than welcome and hopefully we will get a race, Kenny can get his National Champs to the level he and his sponsors deserve and we can get on with what should be the main thing, racing bikes.

Folks, if the verbal promises are followed up then we have 13 seniors and 8 youths.

The closing date is this Saturday. I am looking for 7 senior riders to enter and if possible another 7 youths.

I need 20 riders to make up the two groups after the prologue.

Check out the GGP section for the first interview with this years riders, one of ADCAs brightest talents Callum Smith, who balances his main focus as a top class cross country skier with some impressive RR performances.

Come on everyone, its 7 riders which isn't much to ask for.

Thanks to a great response from riders, some who have never raced before and some who have ridden at some high level events, the Grampian Grand Prix is ON. We are close to 20 seniors and have about 12 youths going by forum posts and via some emails tonight.

To those who have entered, thank you. But keep them coming in, the more we have the better the racing.

Start sheets wil be sent by email on Monday 16th August and posted here.

Thanks

Malcolm
